The Humble Beginnings: A Truck Stop Along I-80

The story of Boomtown Casino Resort starts in the mid-1960s when the property was first established as “Bill and Effie’s,” a simple truck stop catering to the needs of travelers along the bustling I-80 highway. It was a popular pit stop for long-haul truckers, offering a place to refuel, grab a bite to eat, and rest for a while.

In 1967, the property caught the attention of businessman Bob Cashell, who recognized its potential and saw an opportunity to expand. Cashell’s vision for the site went far beyond a truck stop—he wanted to turn it into a full-fledged casino and hotel that could cater to travelers and tourists looking for entertainment and excitement. In 1968, with this new vision in mind, Cashell officially reopened the property as Boomtown Reno, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its history.

Ownership Changes and Expansion: Growing Into a Resort Destination

Boomtown began to grow and attract more guests, and in 1988, the property changed hands when Cashell Enterprises sold Boomtown, Inc. to Hollywood Park, Inc., a company that would later become Pinnacle Entertainment. This acquisition was a major milestone for Boomtown, and it allowed the property to expand significantly. During this time, Boomtown Reno became an even more well-known spot for both locals and visitors.

Pinnacle Entertainment’s ownership of Boomtown continued until 2012, when the property was sold to M1 Gaming and St. John Properties for $12.9 million. The sale marked a new era for Boomtown as it continued to grow and develop. St. John Properties, a real estate firm based in Maryland, eventually took full ownership in 2014, guiding Boomtown through its next phase of development.

The resort’s hotel rooms were renovated to provide a more comfortable and modern stay for visitors, ensuring that Boomtown remained a top destination for those looking for excitement, relaxation, and great food.

In 2016, Boomtown entered a new chapter by becoming affiliated with Best Western Hotels & Resorts, further enhancing its hospitality offerings and guest experience.
